My 2nd talk at VMware Explore 2024

Together with my fellow VMUG Leader Patrick Häfner, I will be giving a talk at this year’s VMware Explore in Barcelona. Whereby ‘talk’ is the wrong choice of word here. We will start an interactive discussion with topics about the VMUG community, information exchange and benefits that can arise for everyone.

Patrick and I have been active in the VMUG for many years. Together with Andreas Wizemann, he manages VMUG-Stuttgart. Together with Markus Gehm and Jens Klasen, I am the leader of VMUG-Kaiserslautern.

German VMUG UserCon 2024 in Frankfurt

On April 25, 2024, the German VMUG UserCon will open its doors in Frankfurt am Main. It is the first UserCon in Germany since the acquisition of VMware by Broadcom.

The German VMUG UserCon is the annual meeting of the seven local VMUG groups in Germany.

Keynote Speaker

We are particularly pleased to present this year’s keynote speakers.

With Joe Baguley, CTO EMEA, who has already supported us at several previous VMUG events, we were able to win over our preferred candidate early on in the planning phase. Joe is an eloquent and witty speaker who knows how to engage his audience, even with complex topics.

Brad Tompkins, VMUG Executive Director, should be familiar to regular UserCon visitors. This year he will not be joining us via video message as usual, but will be present in person. In view of the many UserCons taking place around the world, it is a special pleasure to welcome him to Frankfurt.

Our third guest is no less than Broadcom President and CEO Hock Tan. His commitment to come to Frankfurt has only been official since the beginning of March and has surprised even the biggest optimists in the organization team. The story behind it all began at last year’s VMUG Leader Reception during VMware Explore in Barcelona. The then-not-yet VMware CEO came to the traditional VMUG Leader Reception as a surprise guest and chatted freely with the leaders about his plans with VMware, VMware Explore and the VMUG. Over a glass of wine, I asked him if he would like to come to Frankfurt for UserCon in 2024. He said yes, if his calendar would allow it, and that we should clarify the details with his office. We took his answer at the time as a polite ‘maybe’ without seriously hoping for it. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the VMUG HQ in the Netherlands for making this appointment possible.

Breakout Sessions

Nevertheless, what would a UserCon be without its presentations in the numerous breakout sessions? In four parallel series of lectures, each with 6 blocks, technical backgrounds are explained and new technologies are presented. Here, too, we were able to attract top-class speakers. These include the well known vRockstars Duncan Epping and Cormac Hogan, who will introduce us to the latest developments in vSAN ESA and DSM 2.0 respectively.

Agenda of the German VMUG UserCon 2024

Closing Keynote

The event will be wrapped up by Björn Brundert (Broadcom). He is also an old familiar face at German UserCons. In 2022, he gave the keynote speech at the first UserCon after the pandemic. His presentation on Tanzu Kubernetes at UserCon 2019, during which the room was about to burst, was also unforgettable.

VMware Explore EMEA 2023 – Know before you go

In a few days, VMware Explore 2023 EMEA will open its doors in Barcelona at the Fira Gran Via. For all those attending for the first time, this should be a small guide to help you find your way around. I had already published a small survival guide for this in 2018, which is still largely accurate. Even though the event is now being held for the second time with the name VMware Explore instead of the original name VMworld.

From the Airport to the City

There are regular shuttle buses from the airport to the city center. The Aerobus lines T1 and T2 start at Terminal 1 and 2 and both go via Placa Espana to the Placa Catalunya station near the old town. The prices have increased slightly, but are still a cheap and fast way to get to the city center. A return ticket costs €11.65 per person.

If you stay near the Fira, you can also take the L9 metro from the airport to Fira.

Getting to the Fira

The public transport network in Barcelon is well organized. No matter where you live, the nearest metro station is usually no more than 2 blocks away. Trains run very frequently. The destination station is either Europa/Fira, with a 10-minute walk to VMwareExplore, or you can change trains again to Fira station from where it’s just a 5 minute walk.

The public transport company TMB offers a 10-trip ticket. 10 journeys throughout the city for just under €12.

Pro tip: Ask for a Metro Ticket when registering for VMware Explore. The above-mentioned 10-ticket was only issued to participants on request.

Activities beyond VMware Explore

VMware Explore will challenge you physically. Lots of talks, technical deep dives, interesting sessions and, above all, long distances. During the course of the day, you will walk many steps to get from the trade fair (Expo) to the presentations or to lunch. If you still have energy left, you can plunge into the nightlife. There are numerous parties and vBeers all over the city. My friend and vExpert colleague Fred Hofer (vBrain.info) has collected the most important events in his blog post “VMware Explore 2023 Barcelona – Parties and Gatherings“.

Particularly noteworthy is the traditional vBreakfast on Tuesday mornings between 7:00 and 8:30 before the General Session. This is where the part of the community that makes it out of bed so early meets. Even though the event is generously sponsored by Runecast, it has nothing in common with an promotional event. This is a meeting place for bloggers, VMUG leaders or simply people interested in the community. Even if you don’t know anyone yet – you’ll know a lot of interesting people afterwards. Guaranteed!

Community

Aside from the technical content of the presentations, it is of course all about making contacts, networking and maintaining friendships. I didn’t know anyone when I attended VMworld for the first time. To my surprise, I was quickly welcomed by well-connected members. I still count many of these first acquaintances among my circle of friends today and look forward to meeting them again every year.

Dresscode

Rule number 1: leave the office clothes in the wardrobe. Put on comfortable shoes that you can easily walk around in all day.

Nobody expects a jacket and shirt here. On the other hand, T-shirts from a past VMware or VMUG event are always good conversation starters.

Registration

When you register for VMware Explore, you will receive your exhibition badge, which gives you access to the exhibition site and the sponsored evening events.

Registration is open on all days of the fair. If you arrive early, you can pick up your badge on Sunday from 3 pm.

VMware Explore 2022 – Join us on-site in Barcelona

Early bird registration for VMware Explore Europe is open. From November 7-10, 2022, the Fira Gran Via in Barcelona will once again open its doors.

As you may have heard, there is a name change. VMworld will now be called VMware Explore. Hopefully that’s the only change, because VMworld has been the epicenter of the vCommunity for years and the bond that holds the community together at its core.

Live again at last

I am very happy that for the first time since 2019, this event can be held on-site again. The pandemic forced us to suspend events like VMworld for two years and replace them with virtual events. It was good to have this possibility of virtual events and the organizers tried their best to provide the community with information. But after two years and hundreds of virtual events, we’ve all grown a little weary of virtual events. This is why the term “zoom fatigue” was born. There’s a big difference between attending a session live and watching a recording.
